Photo GalleryMADISON, N.J. (Nov. 24, 2015) – After a back-and-forth battle that saw both teams enjoy an eight-point lead, the Drew University men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game against King's (Pa.) College, 74-68, in Baldwin Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Senior guard
Kevin Herring II led the Rangers' attack with 23 points on accurate shooting, 7-of-11 overall with 5-of-7 three-point shooting. The co-captain added five rebounds, four assists, a steal and a 4-of-5 mark from the free throw line. Junior
Jonathan Allegrezza was next in line for Drew with nine points and four boards.
The Rangers (1-3) led the game 44-36 with 16:52 to play in the game before a 7-0 run over the next minute and a half erased the advantage. Herring immediately put the Rangers back up by seven with back-to-back three-pointers for the 50-43 lead. The Monarchs (4-1) would go on a 14-3 run – with Drew's three coming by way of a Herring triple – and they led the contest, 57-53, midway through the final period.
Freshman
Darius Reiter nailed two three-pointers on the fast breaks off two nice feeds from Herring to put Drew back up by two points, 59-57, to complete a 6-0 run. However, it would be the last lead for Drew as King's used a 6-0 run of its own to take a 63-59 lead with five minutes to play.
Herring kept it close down the stretch, hitting two jumpers within a minute to cut a King's lead to two points, but the Monarch's solid shooting from the charity stripe and high-percentage shots made the difference over the final minutes of the game. A
Nate Aldrich layup again pulled Drew to within two at 69-67 with a minute to play, but a conversion on the other end and 3-of-4 shooting from the line helped King's close out the victory on the road.
The first half was just as back-and-forth as King's stormed out to an eight-point lead of its own at 10-2 over the first five minutes of the game. Drew erased that lead and took its first of the game with a 13-0 run sparked by two treys from freshmen
Dan Roibal and
Brian Oehme. Drew could only get the lead up to six minutes multiple times as King's kept it close and eventually used a 7-0 run over the final two minutes of the half to take a 34-33 lead with 33 seconds left. The Rangers used their last possession to feed Allegrezza under the basket for a bucket and Drew took the 35-34 lead into halftime.
King's outrebounded the Rangers 43-30, and took down 12 offensive boards. The efficiency on the offensive glass allowed the Monarchs to outscore Drew, 18-3, on second chance points. The Monarchs also held a huge advantage in the paint, outdueling Drew's bigs, 32-18, close to the basket.
Drew shot well from the field with a 43% mark overall and 44% from three (10-of-23). King's held the edge as a team from the free throw line at 18-of-22, while Drew converted 12-of-16. The Monarch's Dan Rutecki led the away team with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds.
The Rangers have off for Thanksgiving break before returning to Baldwin Gymnasium on Wednesday, Dec. 2 to kick off Landmark Conference action against The United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7:00 p.m.
