Aldrich's Double-Double Drives Drew to Landmark Win

MADISON, N.J. (December 5, 2015) – Relentless and diverse scoring led to the Drew University men's basketball team's (3-3, 2-0) second straight Landmark Conference victory over Goucher College (3-5, 0-2), 71-61, at Baldwin Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman forward Nate Aldrich notched his second double-double of the season with a 13 point, 12 rebound performance. Senior guard Kevin Herring II turned in a 19 point, seven rebound effort and led all scorers. Sophomore guard Yonathan Napoleon filled out a complete stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Napoleon and the Ranger guards distributed the ball with calculated urgency, with no one player holding the ball for more than a few seconds. Freshman guard Joey Feinberg was a catalyst in that strategy and with nine minutes remaining in a 16-14 game, Feinberg exploded into the key, looking to pass until the last second, when he took it up himself. Feinberg's lay in stood on the rim for a second before finally dripping in for the and-one basket. The 2-pointer brought the score to 18-14, Drew.

Freshman forward Brian Oehme donated his soft shooting touch to the cause, draining three 3-pointers on five tries and snagging five rebounds. Initially unaware of Oehme's deep range prowess, the Gophers left him alone at the top of the key. The 6-5 freshman made Goucher pay for its mistake with a deep 3 to beat the shot clock and extend Drew's lead to 23-16.

The Gophers hung with the Rangers in the first half, countering Drew's finesse with their athleticism. Goucher's forwards challenged Drew's in close to the basket. Aldrich contended with Goucher at its own game, backing down his man down in the post and converting fade-away buckets on back-to-back possessions. Aldrich's sixth and eighth points gave Drew a 32-27 lead with three minutes remaining in the half.

The Rangers exploded out of the half, building upon an eventual 14-0 run that they began in the closing seconds of the first half with a pair of 3-pointers from Herring II from either corner. Herring was coming off a 22-point game just three days earlier, and the baskets got Herring II to 17 points with almost an entire half to go.

The Rangers maintained a double-digit lead for almost the whole second half, preventing Goucher from mounting a threat to the deficit.

The Rangers dominated on the boards, snagging an even 50 to Goucher's 35. They made 15 of their 19 free throws and shot at a 44-percent clip from the field. Drew was efficient from beyond the arc, as well, knocking down 10 3-pointers on 24 attempts.

Drew will get a short break from conference action for a while and will instead compete in the Battle of Madison Avenue with FDU-Florham on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 7:00 p.m. The Rangers won last year's edition, 71-51.
