MADISON, N.J. (Feb. 14, 2015) – The Drew University men's basketball team set a new program record for three-point field goals in a season as the Rangers fell to Susquehanna University, 79-67, in the penultimate Landmark Conference game of the season on Saturday evening in a packed and whited-out Baldwin Gymnasium.
With seven three-pointers on Saturday, the 2014-15 Rangers take the top spot in the record books with 221, surpassing the 219 made in 2008-09.
The Rangers (11-13, 6-9) celebrated the careers of
Steve Hydzik,
Zach Nolan,
Robby Bier and
Brian Ford on Senior Day with a ceremony before the game, and the four took the court to start the game along side junior guard
Mike Klinger. Susquehanna led this one from the first basket to the final buzzer, however, the Rangers are still alive in the Landmark playoff race after Elizabethtown dropped their game at Moravian. The Rangers remain a half-game behind Elizabethtown (8-14, 6-8) for the fourth and final playoff spot with a matchup between the two looming on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
Junior forward
Jason Huelbig led the Rangers on Saturday with 17 points on 5-of-15 shooting and a 6-of-7 mark from the free throw line, while adding five rebounds. Junior swingman
Ozan Yucetepe added 15 points on an accurate 5-of-7 from the floor with two 3-pointers and four boards. Junior guards
Mike Klinger and
Kevin Herring II each finished with 10 points to round out four Rangers in double digits.
A good three-pointer by Bier gave Drew a brief 5-4 lead three minutes in, but the Crusaders (17-6, 10-4) responded with a 10-0 run to take a 14-5 lead. The advantage stretched to as many as 16 midway through the first half. Yucetepe made a personal 5-0 run to follow and helped cut the lead. Susquehanna would take the 43-28 lead into halftime thanks to shooting 50 percent from the floor, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.
In the second half, Drew made a run at the Susquehanna lead three minutes in. A Klinger, Huelbig and Yucetepe sank a combined four free throws while Klinger, Huelbig and Herring made buckets to get the lead down to 10 at 53-43 with 13:39 remaining. That's as close as Drew would get down the stretch, as Susquehanna kept finding the answer to pull away. The Rangers kept up the fight, cutting the lead to 10 on three occasions late in the game on a Herring 3-pointer and layups from Yucetepe and junior guard
Brian McLaughlin.
The seniors again took the court down the stretch as Hydzik scored three of the final five Ranger points.
The pivotal game against Elizabethtown is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Baldwin Gymnasium.
