Late Rally Gives Susquehanna Win in Series Finale

MADISON, N.J. (March 30, 2015) – The Drew University baseball team dropped a Landmark Conference series finale, 6-4, after Susquehanna University rallied from behind for three runs in the top of the eighth inning on Monday at Doc Young Field.

The Rangers (6-11, 4-5) won the season series against the defending Landmark Conference champions, the Crusaders (10-7, 7-2), who won their seventh straight conference contest on Monday.

Senior shortstop Steve Kowalski paced Drew at the plate (3-for-5) and drove in two runs. Senior center fielder Al Krause picked up two hits in five at-bats, including the 100th of his career in the fourth inning. Freshman right fielder Ryan Sabbag and sophomore third baseman Jonathan Rodrigues both had two hits in the setback.

Junior starting pitcher Dylan Baxter settled down nicely after allowing a home run in each of the first two frames. The Rangers' southpaw found his groove and scattered seven hits and zero walks over seven innings with four strikeouts. However, the Crusaders put the first two men on against Baxter in the eighth, leading to his exit. Senior closer Matthew Hunter came on for the six-out save, but the inherited runners scored to tie the game. Hunter's first batter, who reached on a fielder's choice when Hunter tried to gun out the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt, came around to score the eventual game-winner later in the eighth.

Drew chipped away at the early 2-0 lead beginning in the bottom of the fourth, when Krause led off the inning with his 100th career hit, and came around to score on an RBI base knock by junior second baseman Anthony Feltre to make it 2-1.

Kowalski tied it up in the fifth with an RBI single, plating Rodrigues, who led off the inning with a double over the left fielder's head. Four hits in the seventh inning, including clutch RBI singles by Kowalski and Krause, gave Drew the 4-2 lead.

Kowalski extended his hitting streak to eight straight games. The senior shortstop has hit .533 over that span.

The Rangers continue non-conference play on Tuesday, March 31 at Doc Young Field, where they host Rutgers-Newark at 3:30 p.m.
