Softball Seniors Saluted; Drew Drops DH to Catholic

MADISON, N.J. (April 10, 2015) – The Drew University softball team fell to The Catholic University of America Cardinals in both halves of a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, 5-4 in a 10 inning thriller in Game 1, and 3-0 in the second game.

The team celebrated the career of four seniors with a ceremony between the two games. Third baseman Kate McNamara, catcher Rebecca Hutsebaut, and pitchers Amy Benedict and Laura D'Ornellas were all honored before the final home conference game of the season.

Game 1 was a nail biter that required 10 innings of play before Catholic (10-10, 3-5) pulled away. The 10th inning tiebreaker rule was implemented which placed a runner at second to start both halves of the inning. Catholic drove theirs in with a single up the middle to secure the victory.

Four Rangers (5-19, 0-8) logged two-hit games including D'Ornellas who went 4-for-7 in both games combined in addition to pitching all 10 innings of the Game 1 affair.

Freshman left fielder Brooke Adams smacked a single off the first baseman in the 7th to force extra innings. The RBI was her second of the day after she opened the scoring with a single in the third. McNamara and freshman center fielder Heather Ronchi also drove in runs in the contest.

The Rangers loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th with nobody out but only managed a tying run before the Cardinals wiggled out of the jam.

Game 2 saw the Rangers collect only four hits, with D'Ornellas logging half of them with singles in the second and sixth.

Sophomore starter Emma Agostini twirled seven innings of three-run ball but received no run support.

The Rangers travel to Wayne, N.J. on Monday, April 13 to square off with William Paterson University in a non-conference doubleheader slated for a 3:00 p.m. start.
