WAYNE, N.J. (April 13, 2015) – The Drew University softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader at William Paterson University, 5-3 and 4-0, in non-conference road action on Monday afternoon.
Â
Game 1 featured senior pitchers
Amy Benedict and
Laura D'Ornellas in the circle as they split the first half of the sun soaked double dip in Wayne. Each hurler went three innings and allowed a single earned run.
Â
At the plate, sophomore right fielder
Phylicia Pellot went yard for the first time in her career, blasting one to left field in the first plate appearance of the game.
Â
William Paterson would answer with a homer of its own in the bottom half of the opening frame. The three-run shot made the score 3-1 by the end of the first. The Pioneers continued to chip away adding a run in the fourth and fifth.
Â
After Pellot's first inning solo shot, the Pioneer pitcher found her groove, refusing to allow another Ranger hit until the sixth inning. The Drew hitting drought ended with a two-out single down the right field line by freshman left fielder
Brooke Adams. Adams would come all the way around to score after freshman center fielder
Heather Ronchi laced a single into left that the Pioneers had trouble corralling.
Â
Despite three more singles in the seventh, Drew couldn't quite make up for the deficit it accrued early on.
Â
In Game 2, sophomore starter
Emma Agostini took the circle as she and the opposing starter exchanged three scoreless innings of work to get started.
Â
Agostini got into a bit of a jam in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases before allowing a two-out single through the right side, she quickly got the next batter to pop up, but not before two Pioneers crossed the plate. The score stood at 2-0 after four.
Â
The Pioneers (16-9-1) tacked on two more in the sixth to lead it 4-0 as their starting pitcher was twirling a gem. Pellot broke up the perfect game with a single in the sixth, but that would be Drew's only base runner in the second game as William Paterson won the one-hit shutout.
Â
Drew continues non-conference play on Thursday, April 16 at 3:00 p.m. when it hosts the Battle of Madison Avenue against FDU-Florham.
