MADISON, N.J. (April 16, 2015) – The Drew University softball team burst out of the Game 2 gate, using a 3-run first to explode into what would become an 8-4 Game 2 victory and impressive offensive output, after being edged in Game 1 of the Battle of Madison Avenue with FDU-Florham 4-1.
Game 1 began as a textbook pitcher's duel with the score after six reading 1-0, Drew. On the positive side of the docket was sophomore starter
Emma Agostini who twirled a glistening line of 6 innings, no runs, 5 hits, and 2 strikeouts. However in the seventh inning, the Devils worked the bases loaded with 2 outs before drawing a walk to tie the game and smacking back-to-back singles to take the lead.
Agostini would take the tough luck loss after tossing 6.2 scoreless innings. FDU needed all 21 outs to take the win.
Drew's lone run came in the fifth from its leading hitter, freshman outfielder
Heather Ronchi, who drove in fellow freshman outfielder
Brooke Adams with a double to right-center. The RBI two-bagger proved to be the only run in the opening act of the twin bill and raised Ronchi's batting average to .307.
Adams had two hits on the game, as did senior catcher
Kate McNamara.
Game 2 was a different story as Drew's bats came alive. The Rangers posted their highest run output since their season-opening trip to Florida.
Adams enjoyed another multi-hit performance, netting three in the Game 2 victory. Adams found herself in the middle of both of Drew's 3-run innings. The freshman scored a run in both the first and third and drove in sophomore outfielder
Phylicia Pellot in the fifth with a double she placed in the left-center field gap.
For freshman second baseman
Danielle Martinez, reaching base three times wouldn't be enough. In the fourth, Martinez scampered to second on a fielding error to stretch her single, then swiped third when the catcher let a pitch get through to the backstop. She would eventually fly home for the inning's only run after Senior catcher
Rebecca Hutsebaut sent a sacrifice fly to left field. The play made the score 7-1 after four.
FDU-Florham tried their hand at another late-inning comeback by blasting a 3-run homer in the seventh, but senior starting pitcher
Laura D'Ornellas struck out the final batter to secure her complete game victory.
Drew will look to use this win as fuel when they travel to Elizabethtown, P.A. for Landmark Conference action against the Blue Jays. The doubleheader is the start of a 4-game road trip and is set for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch on Saturday, April 18
