Devils Edge Women's Lacrosse in Battle of Mad Ave.

MADISON, N.J. (April 6, 2015) – A second half rally helped FDU-Florham edge the Drew University women's lacrosse team, 13-11, in the 2015 Battle of Madison Avenue on Monday at Ranger Stadium.

Senior attacker Nikki Kleiman led the Drew (6-4) attack with five goals and an assist, but a second half 6-1 scoring run by the Devils (8-3) spanning 18 minutes gave them enough cushion down the stretch to hold on for the rivalry victory. Freshman midfielder Maddie Spiess netted a hat trick for the Rangers in the setback.

Senior defender Sam DeSimone continued to lead the Rangers on the ground ball front, scooping up a game-high five. Freshman midfielder Nicole Kinney controlled five draws for Drew.

FDU-Florham was also aided by a quick start. The Devils took a 4-1 lead 11 minutes in as two FDU goals sandwiched a marker by sophomore attacker Morgan Mason. Kleiman ended that run with her first of five goals to cut the lead to 4-2, but a quick answer from the Devils made it 5-2 at the 13:45 mark of the first half.

The Rangers responded with a scoring run of their own, a 5-1 spurt to end the half with Drew leading 7-6. Two goals by Spiess and a deuce from Kleiman bookended the run, with a tally by freshman Sage Johnson in between.

Both sides traded goals coming out of halftime, with Spiess' third goal of the game coming second and handing Drew the lead back, 8-7. That's when the Devils went on their game-changing run, scoring three goals before a goal by Drew's senior midfielder Krysta Cento made it 10-9 in favor of FDU-Florham. The Devils kept the pressure on with three more markers to take the 13-9 advantage with 9:19 to play.

Two more goals from Kleiman, her 32nd and 33rd of the season, pulled Drew closer at 13-11, but the late-game comeback attempt would stop there as the Devils took the non-conference decision.

The Rangers return to action on Senior Day – Saturday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. when they host Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference action at Ranger Stadium.
