MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 12, 2015) –The Drew University women's soccer team fell in the Fall Festival opener to the Stockton University Ospreys, 1-0 on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium.
Sophomore midfielder
Katie Weber led the team with two shots on goal. Senior forward
Emma Campbell and senior midfielder
Melanie Santos each pitched in a shot on goal as well for the Rangers, who fall to 2-2 on the year.
Bouts of intermittent pouring rain hosed down a sun-spotted Fall Fest contest. Before the downpour, however, the Ospreys (4-1) made sure to convert while the ball was still dry.
In the third minute, senior goalkeeper
Sara Nash employed a brave yet costly aggression. She charged out of the crease on the Osprey's first real scoring chance. She rolled the dice and lost as she tried to steal the ball from an attacker, who booted it into the empty net. The Ospreys drew first blood with the conversion.
Drew made a handful of charges at the net, challenging the Osprey netminder with headers on the fly and sharp shots that had the goalie diving at some points. However the Rangers struggled to get situated in the offensive zone or stay there for long periods of time.
In the 60
th minute, Campbell sprinted downfield after a lob. She attempted a header that required a layout save by the Osprey goalie.
The Osprey's goal would stand up through the remaining 87 minutes.
Fall Fest rolls on with a noontime game with Rutgers-Camden on Sunday, Sept. 13
th at Ranger Stadium.
