MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 15, 2015) – The Drew University women's field hockey team dropped a non-conference night game with William Paterson, 3-0, on a crisp, dark Tuesday at Ranger Stadium
Â
Junior midfielder
Huma Sheikh took five shots on goal in the setback and freshman goalkeeper
Ryann Callaghan notched five saves, making her total for the season 48.
With a defensive save in the game, sophomore midfielderÂ
Michele Pozyc's career total now stands at 25, five shy of the record of 30 in a career.Â
Â
William Paterson beat the keeper with 19 minutes to play in the first half to open the scoring. The forward tried one shot that got kicked to the side of the net. Another forward pounced and thread the needle between the goalie's pad and the pipe, popping it to the opposite side panel.
Â
With 13 minutes to go in the half, sophomore midfielder
Madi Sheetz pushed one past a defender after finding the ball at the half line. She turned it up field and found Skeikh with just a defender to beat. Skeikh wiggled around her and flipped on a backhand try that got kicked away by a lunging pioneer goalkeeper. The score remained at 1-0.
Â
A minute later, Drew kept the pressure on, throwing in sharp balls and forcing a couple of corners. The pioneer defense stood strong, however, keeping the Ranger's half of the scoreboard empty.
Â
As the clock ticked down to eight minutes in the half, the Pioneers came down the field again, flooding the Ranger cage with white jerseys. Within the fray, the ball ricocheted off Callaghan's pads and was thrust past everyone, including Callaghan back into the cage. The 2-0 score in favor of William Paterson would hold until halftime.
Â
Seven minutes into the second half the Pioneers would notch their third goal of the game when a forward played the ball from the left side to the back post. The pioneers would put on five more shots while Drew added three, all from Sheikh.
Â
Drew heads down the road to meet FDU-Florham on Wednesday, Sept. 23
rd for the Battle of Madison Avenue. The game will be the final non-conference contest before Landmark Conference season begins. The Rangers travel to Huntingdon, P.A. to take on Juniata College on Saturday, Sept. 26
