Stingy Goalkeeping Stunts Drew in Loss at Wesley

DOVER, Del. (Sept. 30, 2015) – The Drew University field hockey team matched wits with a fantastic goalkeeping performance in a 3-0 losing effort at Wesley College on Wednesday evening.

The Rangers (1-8) ripped 15 shots against the Wolverines (2-8), including 10 on target. The Wesley goalkeeper, however, had the answer each time as a dime's worth of saves kept the sheet clean and allowed the home squad to come away with the victory.

Wesley bookended its goals with a tally in the ninth minute and got its third in the final minute of play. They added one in the middle in the 60th.

Senior forward Kirby Clark led the charge peppering the Wolverines' cage with three shots on goal, while junior Huma Sheikh and sophomore Madi Sheetz each slapped two on target on Wednesday.

Down 1-0 late in the first half, Drew maintained possession in the Wesley defensive half.  The Rangers won a penalty corner and took four shots in the span of four minutes, but the Wolverine defense held strong to take the slim lead into halftime.

A similar flurry of offense occurred with 12 minutes to play in the second half as Clark, Sheikh and Sheetz all fired shots on net within 45 seconds of each other, only to be denied by a sharp goalkeeper.

Wesley's third goal came with just 34 seconds showing on the clock.

The Blue & Green return to Ranger Stadium for its Landmark Conference home opener on Saturday, Oct. 3 opposite Susquehanna University.
