MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 5, 2015) – Sophomore forward
Benjamin Audi, with the help of a penalty and a beautiful feed from junior midfielder
Joe Sollod, scored the only two goals of the Drew University men's soccer team's 2-0 victory over Roanoke College in Drew's first Fall Fest game at Ranger Stadium on Saturday night.
The Rangers were outshot 12-8 but junior goalie
John Marques posted six saves in the shutout. Marques now holds a perfect 1.000 saves mark in his career.
Drew's first score came when Sollod got sprung down the middle and accelerated past three defenders. On his left was Audi, sprinting equally as fast. The two approached the penalty box with one defender to beat. Sollod snapped a pass across to Audi who took a dribble tapped one past the diving goalie. 10 minutes had elapsed and Drew led 1-0.
"Sollod had a great game," Audi said. "He got the ball to me and I anticipated the pass. The team is feeling great right now and everyone is playing well, that's why we are 2-0."
Audi continued his offensive activity when he floated a high ball into the box from about 25 yards out. Junior midfielder
Cole Leckburg leapt for a header but was dragged to the ground by his jersey. A penalty kick was awarded and Audi took it. He went left and the goalie went right. The score at 10 minutes would stand at 2-0 until the half.
The Rangers' tenacious defense kept the slate clean on the Maroons' side. Junior midfielder
Gio Howells and senior defender
Daniel Giraldo used combinations of slide tackles and smart ball handling to keep the pressure on the Roanoke attackers. Sensing that a two-goal lead would be plenty, the Rangers focused on defense and played conservatively until the finish.
Fall Fest rolls on as Drew hosts The College of Staten Island in non-conference action on Sunday, Sept. 6
