HUNTINGDON Pa. (Jan. 2, 2016) – Junior guard
Joey Feinberg's double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds helped the Drew University men's basketball team remain perfect in Landmark Conference play with a 78-71 victory on the road at Juniata College Saturday afternoon. The Rangers improve to 3-0 in the league and 6-5 overall, while handing the Eagles (9-2, 2-1) just their second loss of the season.
Senior guard
Kevin Herring II led all scorers with 21 points with four made 3-pointers, while senior guard
Mike Klinger netted 19 to go with five assists. The third senior captain,
Brian McLaughlin, also reached double digits with 10 points while pulling down six of Drew's 41 rebounds.
The rebounding battle loomed large en route to Drew's Landmark road victory as Juniata managed just 29 and scored only three second-chance points. Meanwhile, the Rangers essentially led wire-to-wire by shooting 46% from the field, hitting 11 three-pointers and 11-of-15 from the charity stripe. Juniata held just one lead at 68-67 with 4:08 to play, but Drew quickly took back the lead and reverted back to the tried-and-true game plan to pick up the road win.
The Rangers pushed the pace early by establishing a run-and-gun style offense that saw positive results. In a bit of foreshadowing of this style, Drew opened up a 6-0 lead within the game's opening minute on three-pointers from Feinberg and Herring II. Klinger was active in the first half, hitting jump shots from all areas of the court, slashing to the hoop and dishing out three assists when his shot wasn't open.
The lead climbed to 10, the largest of the game, with a minutes remaining in the half. Drew's 42-32 lead was obtained just as the game started; with back-to-back treys by Feinberg and Herring II. Juniata salvaged a bucket at the buzzer to set the score at 42-34 at the intermission.
The Eagles came out of the locker room with a renewed purpose, scoring the first six points of the second half. Again, the Feinberg and Herring II combo rescued the Rangers and stretched the lead back to 47-40 on a couple made jumpers, but the Eagles also had an answer to cut the deficit to 47-46 with under 15 minutes to play.
Over the next 10 minutes, Drew would cling to a slim lead with McLaughlin leading the way offensively with two 3-pointers, two freebies and an assertive offensive rebound and ensuing put-pack. McLaughlin drew a foul on the play, but missed the free throw as Drew held a 67-63 with 4:41 to play.
Juniata then used a quick 5-0 spurt to take their first and only lead of the game, which was quickly erased by a Klinger coast-to-coast layup. That lay-in was the first of three straight by Drew and a pair of Herring free throws to turn an 8-0 run into a 75-68 lead with just a minute left in the game. That was enough to withstand one more Eagles triple as Feinberg and sophomore forward
Blaine Taylor (five points, five rebounds) closed it out for Drew at the line.
The Rangers return home from a three-game road stint on Tuesday, Jan. 5 when they will put their 3-0 Landmark Conference record up against The University of Scranton at 7:00 p.m. in Baldwin Gymnasium.
