TOWSON, Md. (Jan. 25, 2016) – Following two postponements and a delay, the Drew University men's basketball team finally played its Landmark Conference contest at Goucher College on Monday afternoon, with the Gophers (7-11, 3-6) taking an 83-71 victory.
The Rangers (9-9, 6-3) received 17 points apiece from seniors
Mike Klinger and
Kevin Herring II. Klinger also led in rebounding (7) and assists (6), while junior
Joey Feinberg added 12 points and six boards.
Drew held the early advantage behind balanced jump shooting. Even when being fouled, the Rangers found the basket as Klinger finished a three-point play after sinking a jumper from just beyond the foul line. That gave Drew its largest lead of the half at 13-6 with 14:00 to play. Goucher recovered to tie the contest at 21-21 before both teams cooled off from the field, however, the Gophers managed to slowly creep ahead.
As has been proved true throughout the season, the Rangers have the ability to erase deficits quickly with the three-pointer. As the Gophers took its largest lead of the first half, 32-25 with 2:10 left, Drew responded with triples on back-to-back possessions by Herring and Feinberg. Junior
Jonathan Allegrezza turned the spurt into an 8-0 run after cleaning up the offensive glass and converting the put-back for the 33-32 lead.
Following a late Goucher basket, Herring sent Drew into the intermission up 35-34 with a buzzer-beating three, his fourth of the half (4-of-5).
With the game tied at 41-41 at 16:00 mark, Goucher went on 13-5 run over next five minutes to take an eight-point lead at 57-49. With the Gophers up 59-51 at the midway point of the second half, a free throw battle took shape over the next three-plus minutes, when all but a total of four points were scored from the charity stripe. Both teams shot well from the line during the stretch, but Drew had a few more opportunities as they trailed 64-61 with 6:41 to play.
The Gophers tightened up their defense during crunch time and continued to shoot well from the free throw line as they methodically built a double-digit lead down the stretch. Meanwhile, the Rangers were shutout from the 5:00 mark to 1:46, at which point Goucher led the contest, 76-63.
Goucher was aided with an excellent 21-of-26 mark (81%) from the free throw line and a 48% grade from the field. Drew's 19 turnovers led to 22 points on the other end, and Goucher's bench outscored Drew's 31-11. The Rangers hit double-digits in made three pointers for the 13
th time this season.
The Rangers continue Landmark Conference play on the road Wednesday, Jan. 27 at The University of Scranton with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Drew's next home game is against Juniata College on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2:00 p.m. in Baldwin Gymnasium.
