Tight Defense, Late Rally Fall Short in 2-1 Setback

MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 17, 2016) — The Drew University field hockey team's defense was as strong as it's been all season, conceding just two goals to FDU-Florham in the Battle of Madison Avenue, but dropped the contest, 2-1, despite a last-second surge on Monday afternoon.

By the Numbers: Monday setback dropped Drew's overall record to 3-10 and its home record to 2-7. FDU-Florham now sits at 10-5 and 5-3 on the road. FDU has taken the last three decisions in the annual Battle.

Top Performer: Efficient ball movement from Drew in the first half manifested itself in both an equalizing score and sophomore forward Kate Todero's first career goal. Todero also made her presence felt on the opposite end of the field, logging a pivotal defensive save in the closing minutes of the first half.

Turning Point: With 17 minutes to go, Drew's previously stingy defense finally gave way to the Devils' relentless attacks. A one-time goal was scored after a sharp pass that cut straight through the circle before meeting the goal-scorer's stick.

Other Highlights: The Ranger rally that led to their first goal was sparked by freshman forward Audrey Carr, who showcased her breakaway speed switch the field and gain a penalty corner. After a hard insert, Pozyc redirected the ball to Sheetz, who then forced one on net that Todero cleaned up to tie things up at 1-1. with 16 minutes to play in the first half.

Junior midfielder Madi Sheetz flew up the field in the trying final seconds as Drew looked to put a rally together down 2-1. She laid out for a diving shot on goal that the goaltender barely knocked away to end the game.

The Devils drew first blood after what appeared initially to be an impressive defensive save from junior defender Michele Pozyc was whistled illegal by an official. The ensuing penalty stroke snuck between Callaghan and the post for the first score of the day.

Next Up: With home non-conference play concluded for the year, the Rangers face two crucial Landmark Conference games on the road against Moravian and Catholic. The first of the pair takes place on Thursday, October 20th at 5:00 p.m.
