BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Oct. 20, 2016) – Junior forward
Madi Sheetz scored a pair of first half goals and sophomore goalkeeper
Ryann Callaghan made nine saves to preserve a 2-1 victory at Moravian College in Landmark Conference play on Thursday evening.
Â
By the Numbers: The Rangers (4-10) keep their playoff hopes alive, moving to 2-3 in the Landmark with two conference games remaining. Thursday's result was the Rangers' sixth game that ended with a 2-1 score this season, with Drew holding a 3-3 record in those games. The Greyhounds remain winless overall and in conference (0-13, 0-5).
Â
Top Performers: Sheetz scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season, with one of them becoming her second game-winning goal this fall. She took a team-high four shots, all of which were on goal. Freshman midfielder
Sami Strathern executed a brilliant flip pass on the opening goal and Callaghan's nine saves pushed her season total to 134, good for second in the conference.
Â
Turning Point: In a tight game where the first goal would make a big difference, Sheetz delivered in the 18
th minute by tapping in a high flip from Strathern close to the cage for the 1-0 lead. Just seven minutes later, Sheetz provided the 2-0 cushion with a rebound goal following a saved shot off the stick of senior
Huma Sheikh.
Â
Other Highlights: After Moravian's lone goal of the contest in the 43
rd minute, Drew narrowly missed a 3-1 lead when freshman
Anniek van der Klij had her shot picked off the line by a field player on a defensive save.
Â
Stat Sheet: The Greyhounds outshot the Rangers, 13-9, with all nine of Drew's shots being put on goal. Drew created slightly more opportunities in the penalty corner department, 6-5.
Â
Playoff Picture: The Rangers are currently in a three-way tie for the fourth and final Landmark playoff spot with Juniata College and Goucher College at 2-3. Juniata holds the head-to-head tiebreaker against Drew, and Goucher still remains on the Rangers' schedule on Oct. 29 for the regular season finale.
Â
Up Next: Drew travels to The Catholic University of America on Saturday, Oct. 22 for a Landmark Conference matchup beginning at 1:00 p.m.
