Two Swimming School Records Fall on Opening Night

Results

MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 21, 2016) – Two Drew University swimmers broke school records in their collegiate debuts on the opening night of the 2016-17 season Friday evening in a dual meet against Montclair State University.

By the Numbers: The women's swimming & diving team were edged by the Red Hawks, 146-136, and the men were defeated by a score of 163-109.

Top Performers: In her very first collegiate race, freshman Mal Vishwanath shattered the 19-year-old school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:37.73, surpassing Lauren Kenworthy's time of 10:54.26 set in 1997. The win in the 1000 Free was her first of three first place finishes on Friday, later winning the 100-yard and 500-yard freestyle events and accounting for 27 points individually.

It was another collegiate debut and another record broken as freshman Jack Mahoney took down the best school mark in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.11. He snuck past Clayton Curran's mark of 1:48.90 set in 2012. Later, he came close to another first place and an additional school record with a 22.30-second 50-yard freestyle. He missed first place by one-tenth of a second and the school record by two-tenths. He was also a second away from the school record in the 100-yard freestyle in his second place finishing time of 48.90.

Other Highlights: Junior Jenny Stein took first place in two events, winning the 50-yard backstroke in 28.40 seconds and the 1-meter diving event with 248.10 points. Freshman Katie Jefferson also shined in her debut with a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Capping a night of fantastic premiers was freshman Stephanie Cushman, who won the 100-yard backstroke in thrilling fashion, out-touching a Montclair State swimming by thirteen-hundredths of a second.

The men's team continued to show off their freshman power with John Rinald's second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, where he was edged by thirteen-hundredths.

History Made: Junior Mitchell Fry became the first male in school history to compete in diving.

Up Next: The Rangers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 with a dual meet against King's (Pa.) College at 1:00 p.m. at the F.M. Kirby Pool.
