Field Hockey Comeback Falls Short at Wm. Paterson

WAYNE, N.J. (Oct. 26,2016) - The Drew University field hockey team fell short at William Paterson University, 3-2, despite a hard-fought comeback, on a brisk Wednesday night.

By The Numbers: The loss brings the Rangers record to 4-12 on the season. William Paterson improves to 8-9 with the win, their home record improves to 5-4.

Top Performers: Junior Madi Sheetz and freshman Anniek van der Klij both collected goals for the Rangers that brought them within striking distance only down 3-2.  Van der Klij scored her first goal as a Ranger off a timely loose ball pickup in the box. Sheetz collected her team-leading ninth tally of the season. Freshman Sami Strathern collected an assist with an impressive pass from the right corner for an easy Sheetz goal.

Turning Point: Following a 3-0 advantage taken by the Pioneers at halftime, an offensive surge helped Drew get back in the game by the mid-point in the second half. Sheetz's goal came in the 39th minute before van der Klij's marker made it 3-2 in the 50th. William Paterson stopped the bleeding over the final 20 minutes to hold on to the slim margin of victory.

Other Highlights: Sheetz was very nearly the owner of the second goal, but a defensive save kept the ball alive for van der Klij to clean up in the 50th minute. It was one of a team-high three shots on goal by Sheetz.

Stat Sheet: It was a tale of two halves in the shot department, with William Paterson holding a 5-0 lead in shots at halftime before Drew came storming back with a 6-1 advantage in the second half. The Pioneers took six corners to Drew's four and were credited with assists on all three of their goals.

Up Next: Drew matches up against Goucher College in its final game of the 2016 season on Saturday, October 29th at 3:30 p.m. Drew will try to improve on its 2-4 conference record as the season concludes. Fans and family are asked to arrive early as Drew honors the two members of the Class of 2016 on Senior Day.
