MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 5, 2016) – In a front-loaded non-conference contest, the Drew University field hockey team fell by a slim 2-1 margin to visiting DeSales University on Wednesday evening at Ranger Stadium.
By the Numbers: All three goals were scored in the first half. With the loss, the Rangers fall to 2-7 and the Bulldogs improve to 4-8 with a 2-4 mark on the road.
Top Performers: Senior midfielder
Huma Sheikh entered the goal column for the first time in 2016 with her tally in the 24
th minute against DeSales. Deep in Bulldog territory, junior
Madi Sheetz turned her stick to slot in a cross to Sheikh, who received to the opposite end of her body and turned around a shot that shook the back of the cage. The score tied the contest at 1-1 following DeSales opening the scoring in the ninth minute.
Turning Point: Nine minutes after Sheikh's equalizer, the Bulldogs once again took the lead in the 32
nd minute when a tough angle shot struck the post and took a fortuitous bounce into goal. This time the lead would hold.
Other Highlights: Freshman midfielder
Audrey Carr had a chance to tie in the 16
th minute, but her hard shot was turned away by the DeSales keeper. It was one of two shots on goal for the Rangers.
Stat Sheet: DeSales outshot Drew 7-5 with a similar edge in shots on goal at 5-2. The Bulldogs also held an advantage in penalty corners with six compared to Drew's two.
