Women's Basketball Drops Rose City Opener to Hornets

MADISON, N.J. (Nov. 19, 2016) -- The Drew University women's basketball team fell to Shenandoah University by a score of 77-61 in the first round of the 25th Rose City Classic tournament in the home opener in Baldwin Gymnasium.

By The Numbers: The Rangers drop to 1-1 on the year. The Hornets improve to 2-0 on the season and will play for the Rose City Classic title against Middlebury College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Turning Point: The Rangers came out of the locker room with smoldering defense, quickly forcing turnovers, but the intensity was short lived as the Hornets offense became too much to handle. Shenandoah capitalized on second-chance opportunities to aid in an early double-digit lead in the second quarter. At the end of the half, the Rangers were down 41-21.

Top Performers: Senior guard Hannah Miller collected 17 points on the night, including three 3-point field goals. Senior forward Sam Lane had 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Junior guard Michaela Keegan added seven points along with five rebounds.

Stat Sheet: The difference in the game was on the boards, as the Hornets out-rebounded the Rangers, 41-22. Drew continued the theme of stifling defense with 15 steals compared to the Hornets' eight. Shenandoah had 15 second chance points thanks to 13 offensive rebounds. Shenandoah collected 37 bench points while shooting 53 percent from the field. Drew shot 46 percent from the field with 12 bench points.
