ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (Feb. 17, 2016) – With a road victory over Elizabethtown College, 68-64 on Wednesday evening, the Drew University men's basketball team ended its regular season and salvaged its playoff chances for the time being.
Â
Wednesday night saw the perfect scenario for the Rangers and their playoff hopes. Drew won the must-win contest over Elizabethtown College and Juniata College fell to the first place Catholic University of America. Drew has done all it can, ending the regular season with an 8-8 record. The team will be an implicated observer to Juniata's game on Saturday at Moravian. Should Juniata lose, the Rangers would earn the fourth and final seed in the Landmark playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Â
Senior guards
Mike Klinger (7-for-17) and
Kevin Herring II (7-for-14) netted 19 points a piece with Klinger breaking off five assists. Senior guard
Brian McLaughlin and junior center
Kevin-Michael Miller tore down a team-high nine rebounds each and McLaughlin contributed 13 points.
Â
A Klinger 3-pointer put Drew ahead with 45-43 with 15 minutes to go in the second half. The small lead was plenty for the Rangers as they fended the Blue Jays off for the entire rest of the game, while remaining consistent from the free throw line down the stretch as Elizabethtown resorted to fouling while down by a slim margin and the clock running out.
Â
Drew shot 41-percent from the field, with a lot of good baskets falling in the later stages of the win. The teams sank 11 free throws each.
Â
The Rangers' season rests on Moravian's shoulders as the Greyhounds host Juniata College at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday. The United States Merchant Marine Academy (6-8) has two games to play this weekend, the latter tilt coming against a Catholic team gunning for the No. 1 seed. Should USMMA win both games, they'd force a three-way tie for the fourth spot in the standings that Drew has the tiebreaker for with a 3-1 record among the three tied teams. Juniata and USMMA would both be 2-2 in that tiebreaker scenario.
