NEWARK, N.J. (March 22, 2016) -- The Drew University softball team dropped both halves of Tuesday afternoon's road doubleheader with Rutgers-Newark, 5-1 and 7-6 in non-conference play.
Next Tuesday, March 29
th the Rangers will take on non-conference opponent Stockton University in a home doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
McGuire Scores Again in Setback Game 1 of the doubleheader saw Drew (6-8) fall to the Scarlet Raiders (8-6). Freshman pitcher
Bethany Budner kicked things off for the Raiders in the circle and allowed two earned runs over two innings of work. Junior pitcher
Emma Agostini took over in relief and worked the final four innings, allowing three earned runs.
The Ranger bats strung together seven hits in the setback with the lone run coming off the bat of Agostini as a sacrifice fly drove in junior shortstop
Meghan McGuire. It was Mcguire's 8
th run scored of the year and Agostini's 7
th RBI.
Agostini Bomb Not Enough In Game 2 Game 2 saw a much more encouraging offensive showcase from the Rangers. Freshman third baseman
Sammie Booth went 3-for-3 with a double in the game. Out of the leadoff spot, junior outfielder
Phylicia Pellot went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Junior pitcher
Emma Agostini blasted a crucial 2-run homer late in the game for her first career round-tripper.
Following the Game 1 setback, the Rangers stormed back in game 2. Budner's short stint allowed her to start the second game as well, and she responded with three more innings of work before being relieved, once again, by Agostini.
Agostini made her presence felt beyond the pitching circle. She added on to her run-scoring day at the plate in Game 1 with a critical 2-run home run in the 7
th inning of Game 2. The long ball was Agostini's first of her career and it brought the Rangers to within one run of the lead.
In the 5
th inning the Rangers rallied for five runs, all coming on singles, walks, and productive outs.
The Ranger's 7-run game fell just short of getting them the win.
