KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 26, 2016) – The Drew University baseball team completed the Landmark Conference series sweep at The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon with 3-2 and 4-2 victories at Lower Roosevelt Field. The three-game sweep moves the Rangers' league record to 3-3 and overall record to 9-10. The Mariners fall to 1-5 in Landmark play and 4-10 overall.
Â
Top Performers: Junior
Tommy Broyles did it all on Sunday, knocking in the winning run in Game 1 and picking up the save on the mound in Game 2 by retiring the final five Mariners in order. It was Broyles' 11
th RBI of the season and third save, two of which came during the conference series sweep. He went 3-for-8 with a run and two RBIs throughout the twin bill.
Â
Junior starting pitcher
Patrick Boyle pitched a gem in Game 1, going the distance in the seven-inning contest with two runs and seven hits allowed. Boyle was both powerful and accurate, walking just one and striking out a career-high eight batters.
Â
The Difference Maker: In Game 1, it was Broyles' bat. It took until the fifth inning for USMMA to get to Boyle, who was spinning an effecting start on the bump, and the score was tied 2-2 heading into the final scheduled inning. Senior first baseman
Bobby Miskura doubled with one out, and after an infield single by junior catcher
Mike Miraglia, Broyles delivered what has become a patented clutch hit to put Drew up 3-2.
Â
The turning point in Game 2 was a three-run third. Miraglia tagged a sacrifice fly out to right field, but a costly error allowed him to reach base and eventually scored on an RBI single by freshman left fielder
Jayson Mitch. Junior third baseman
Jonathan Rodrigues finished off the rally with another sac fly, this one give the Rangers a 4-0 lead.
Â
Other Highlights: Senior second baseman
Anthony Feltre picked up three hits and scored two runs on Saturday, sophomore right fielder
Ryan Sabbag extending his hitting streak to six games with 1-for-3 and 2-for-4 lines against the Mariners, and Miskura also now has a six-game hitting streak (1-for-4, 2-for-4). Mitch picked up a pair of hits in each game Saturday to run his season average to .358. Junior starting pitcher
Ryan Fitzpatrick got the call in Game 2 and improved to 1-1 after 5.1 innings of two-run ball with four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Â
Coach's Take: "Our starting pitching today was outstanding. Both Patrick and Ryan got ahead early in counts and kept a very good hitting team off balance. We played another clean game defensively, taking pressure off our pitchers and offense. We had several hitters who had multi-hit games."
"I know it's early in the season, but these were must-win games for us. Our offense stepped up big when we need them." - Head Coach
Brian Hirschberg.
Up Next: Landmark Conference play makes its 2016 debut at Doc Young Field on Saturday, April 2 against Juniata College, but not before a tough pair of non-conference games on the road at Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday, March 29 (3:30 p.m.) and at Franklin & Marshall College on Wednesday, March 30 (4:00 p.m.)
