NEWARK, N.J. (March 29, 2016) – A shutdown relief pitching effort by freshman
Josh Williams and a clutch pinch-hit RBI from junior
Kevin Skettini propelled the Drew University baseball team (10-10) past Rutgers-Newark (8-10) in a come-from-behind 9-8 victory on the road Tuesday afternoon. Drew runs its winning streak to four games.
Top Performers: Williams pitched the final four innings without allowing a run, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out seven to improve to 2-1 on the mound this spring. Senior first baseman
Bobby Miskura, junior catcher
Dan Pfefferkorn and freshman left fielder
Jayson Mitch all batted 3-for-5 with an RBI apiece, and sophomore right fielder
Ryan Sabbag hit a two-run home run, his third round-tripper of the season, in the third inning before adding the game-tying RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the eighth.
The Turning Point: With the score tied 8-8, Skettini came up for the first time on Tuesday as a pinch hitter with one out and the go-ahead run on second base. The junior batted a ball back up the middle, chasing junior third baseman
Jonathan Rodrigues home for the 9-8 lead. Rodrigues had singled an at-bat earlier and advanced on a passed ball. Williams finished off the win by striking out the side in the eighth, and striking out a fourth straight in the ninth before getting the final outs of the game.
Other Highlights: The Scarlet Raiders held an 8-5 lead over the Rangers heading into the seventh inning, and Drew promptly loaded the bases before a single out was recorded. Pfefferkorn picked up his third hit of the day to start a three-run rally, an RBI single to left field to drive home Mitch, who led off the inning with an infield single. Mitch's RBI also came on an infield single back in the first inning, putting Drew up 2-0 after junior
Tommy Broyles delivered an RBI groundout earlier in the frame. It was Broyles' third straight game with an RBI.
Up Next: The Rangers continue their mid-week road trip on Wednesday, March 30 at Frankin & Marshall College with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
