MEMPHIS, TN (Mar. 6, 2016) -- The Drew University men's lacrosse team traveled to a different time zone to take on an undefeated Rhodes College team and fell, 7-6, after an energetic fourth quarter on Sunday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Tom Cotroneo had no trouble adjusting to the mid-70's Tennessee temperature, netting the game's first goal less than two minutes in. Cotroneo finished with two goals on the day. Freshman attacker Ryan D'Alessandro added to his team leading points total with two assists. The rest of the scoring was evenly spread out between six Rangers. Drew (0-2) opened the fourth quarter with a quick pass sequence following a Lynx turnover. Lloyd bothered the ball carrier, slapped the ball free, and collected the ground ball. He cleared it and played it on to D'Alessandro who zipped a pass over to freshman attacker Thomas Ensmenger who fired home his first career score. The conversion made it 5-4, Rhodes (7-0) early in the fourth quarter. Rhodes answered the score with two more of their own. Then, after a rally following a faceoff win, sophomore midfielder Joe Palmieri worked it to senior midfielder Steven Cola who fired in a goal to make it 7-5 Rhodes with 10 minutes to go in the game. The goal marked Cola's third point of the year. Seven minutes after his brother assisted, freshman midfielder Eduardo Palmieri brought the Rangers to within one goal of the tie with his first college score. The conversion made for a frantic final three minutes where the Rangers fell just short of the tie.Cotroneo used a Ludeman lead pass to spring towards the net as he fired in the game's first conversion while the game was just two minutes old. Rhodes responded with a goal in the first and a goal in the second to take a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes to go in the second quarter. Five minutes later, Cotroneo scored again, this time assisted by D'Alessandro for his team-leading fourth point of the year. The Lynx answered the Cotroneo equalizer with a three-goal rally that took them to halftime leading 5-2.
Out of the break, former Landmark Rookie of the Year, junior defender
Michael Lloyd netted his first goal of the year after a long transitional clear attempt off a Lynx turnover in the defensive zone. Lloyd's first point cut the Lynx lead to 5-3.
Drew and Rhodes shot at identical rates, each posting 14 shots on goal on 26 shots total. Both teams also had three unsuccessful clears, with Drew going 13-16 and Rhodes, 18-21.
Next, the Rangers ship out to Conway, Az. for a contest with Hendrix College. That game is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 9 at 8:15 p.m.
