Catholic Takes Two From Drew Baseball in D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 16, 2016) – The Drew University baseball team (14-16, 7-7) dropped both ends of a Landmark Conference doubleheader at The Catholic University of America, 7-2 and 13-0, on Saturday.

Top Performers: Sophomore shortstop Isaiah Mateo hit his first career home run in the fifth inning of Game 1, a two-run shot to put Drew on the board and cut a Catholic deficit to 4-2. Senior catcher Dan Pfefferkorn was 2-for-2 in Game 2.

Turning Point: Following Mateo's homer, the Cardinals (14-16, 5-9) responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the first of two games. In Game 2, the Cardinals coasted with 15 hits compared to Drew's five, while the Ranger defense made five errors

Other Highlights: Freshman outfielder Jayson Mitch picked up a hit in Game 1 and continues to rank second on the team with a .375 batting average. Senior first baseman Bobby Miskura, junior designated hitter Mike Miraglia and junior outfielder Tommy Broyles all recorded hits in Game 2.

Playoff Picture: The pair of losses drops the Rangers into fifth place for the time being, a half-game out of the No. 4 spot occupied by The University of Scranton (7-6), who has played one game fewer. The Rangers can still control their own destiny with two teams ahead of them (Elizabethtown College and Scranton) still left on the 2016 schedule. Moravian, whom Drew took 2-of-3 from last weekend, sits in second place at 7-5 and two fewer games played.

Up Next: The Rangers look to salvage the series finale on Sunday, April 17 at Catholic beginning at noon.
