WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 16, 2016) -- Saturday afternoon saw the Drew University softball team concede both halves of a doubleheader with The Catholic University of America, 3-0 and 3-2.
Â
Top Performers: Freshman first baseman
Cara O'Leary picked up the first two hits of her career in Game 1. O'Leary made the most of the first start of her young career, as her performance accounted for half of Drew's (7-17, 1-7) hitting in the first game. In the third inning, O'Leary pushed a bunt down the third baseline that she beat out for a single and in the fifth, slapped a ball right back up the middle for another hit. Game 2 saw O'Leary pick up another base knock, bunting again down the third baseline to lock in a 3-for-6 debut. Sophomore catcher
Heather Ronchi went 3-for-7 on the day and scored a run. Ronchi added to her team-high .437 batting average.
Â
Promising Pitching: Game 1's starter, junior
Emma Agostini went all six innings, yielding just two earned runs. Agostini got beat by a 3-run long ball by Catholic (19-7, 7-3) in the third, and that was the only blemish against her. Freshman hurler
Bethany Budner took the circle in Game 2 and surrendered just one earned run, but the two unearned runs were enough to edge her as neither pitcher received much run support.
Â
Other Highlights: The Rangers picked up two runs in Game 2. The first came when junior outfielder
Phylicia Pellot intelligently took off for home after Ronchi got herself in a pickle with two outs. Pellot touched the plate before Ronchi was tagged out to get Drew on the board. In the fifth, Ronchi scored after sophomore third baseman
Lauren Mastropierro knocked her in with a single. Ronchi would score all the way from first after an error prolonged the play.
Â
Up Next: The Rangers host non-conference opponent Lehman College on Tuesday April 19
th. First pitch of the double dip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Drew University softball complex.
