ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (April 16, 2016) -- Saturday marked the third game in a row in which the Drew University women's lacrosse team scored 18 or more goals in a game, and with a victory against Landmark Conference rival Elizabethtown College, 18-12, Drew may be peaking at just the right time.
Playoff Picture: The crucial conference win brings Drew (5-9, 2-2) to a tie with Elizabethtown (5-9, 2-2) for the coveted four spot in the standings. It also ensures that the Rangers will have the season series over the Blue Jays if the teams were to finish with the same record.
Top Performers: Fronting the Ranger charge were junior midfielder
Morgan Mason - who scored her 100th career goal on her seventh and final tally of the afternoon - and sophomore midfielder
Juliana Strazulo. Both players achieved feats that rank among the greatest in Ranger history. Mason scored seven goals in this game, the fifth highest single-game total the program has ever seen. Her nine points are tied for ninth all-time, as well. In addition to matching a career high with four goals, Strazulo caused seven turnovers, good for the second-most ever for a Ranger. This stat has become Strazulo's specialty as she ties the school record for a single season with 45 caused turnovers, with still three games to play. She currently sits atop the entire conference with her 45 caused turnovers. Sophomore attacker
Sage Johnson scored four goals in the win, a career-high. The attacker has combined for nine points in her last two games.
Turning Point: Offense was at an absolute premium in the first half, with seven lead changes occurring. Strazulo, who whipped home a goal to make it 8-7 Drew with 2:43 to go in the first half, finally silenced the teeter-totter affair, giving Drew a lead they would never relinquish.
Other Highlights: After Strazulo's score, which came with the Rangers up a player, Drew added two more quick ones, ramping up the momentum and taking a 10-7 lead into halftime. Out of the break, the Rangers tacked on three more goals, with Strazulo ending the flurry with the score at 13-7 with just over 20 minutes to go in the game. The cross-half scoring spree made for a 6-0 Ranger run that propelled them to victory.
Stat Sheet: Junior attacker
Anna Fiorini notched four points in the win. Also scoring were sophomore midfielder
Maddie Spiess and junior attacker
Theresa Shafron. Dating back to last year, Spiess has scored a goal in 16 straight games, including every contest this season. As a team, Drew put 33 shots on net to the Blue Jays' 18.
