Rangers Top Goucher, 14-7, to Clinch Playoff Berth



MADISON, N.J. (April 30, 2016) – The Drew University women's lacrosse team is going to the 2016 Landmark Conference championship tournament after topping Goucher College, 14-7, in a "win-and-in" game in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium.
 
Tourney Time: The Rangers (7-10, 3-3) clinch the No. 4 seed in the Landmark playoffs, and will travel to top-seeded The Catholic University of America on Wednesday, May 4 at 5:00 p.m. Catholic (9-7, 6-0) defeated Drew in the regular season on April 2 in Washington, 21-11. No. 2 Susquehanna University will host the other semifinal on Wednesday against No. 3 The University of Scranton.
 
Top Performers: Drew's playoff clinching performance was sparked by sophomore midfielder Maddie Spiess, who scored five goals, including three within the opening 20 minutes to aid in the Rangers taking a 5-3 lead. Junior midfielder Morgan Mason picked up her 11th hat trick of the season with a trio of goals against Goucher to go with two assists, while sophomore midfielder Juliana Strazulo turned in her patented stat line of one goal, two assists, seven ground balls and seven caused turnovers with committing a single turnover.
 
Strazulo extends her Drew and Landmark Conference records for caused turnovers in a season to 67, and officially sets a new Landmark record for ground balls in a season with 82.
 
Turning Point: Drew captured the momentum early in the must-win game by scoring the game's first three goals within the opening 10 minutes, two by Spiess and one by Mason. With the Gophers trailing by one with 3:17 to play in the opening half, the Rangers scored seven straight goals spanning halftime to take control of the game. Spiess and Mason both scored a pair of goals during the run.
 
Other Highlights: Junior attacker Anna Fiorini had two goals and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Sage Johnson scored an important goal in the first half, hitting the back of the net at the 13:13 mark to put Drew up 4-2. Junior attacker Theresa Shafron recorded a goal and an assist, while sophomore midfielder Nicole Kinney netted the 22nd goal of her 2016 season.
 
Senior Salute: The Rangers' defense was led by their lone member of the Class of 2016 on Senior Day, Allison Kreisinger. She celebrated her day by commanding the defense that allowed just 10 shots on goal. Kreisinger picked up three grounders and caused a turnover in the win.
 
Key Stats: Drew outshot the Gophers, 43-13, and dominated the ground ball battle, 29-16. The draw control advantage also went to the Rangers by a 15-8 margin, including many at key momentum shifting moments during the game.
