Kean's Goalie Stymies Women's Lacrosse on the Road

UNION, N.J. (April 6, 2016) – An excellent goalkeeping effort stymied the Drew University women's lacrosse team (2-9) in a tight setback at Kean University (9-1) on Wednesday evening in a non-conference contest.

Top Performers: Sophomore midfielder Maddie Spiess scored twice for Drew to increase her team-leading goal total to 28 thanks to scoring in every game thus far. Sophomore midfielder Juliana Strazulo also scored two goals, while adding three groundballs, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Junior midfielder Morgan Mason added a tally to increase her goal-scoring streak to six straight games.

The Turning Point: Despite being outshot, the Cougars' (9-1) defense and goalkeeper held strong throughout a second half comeback attempt. Down 6-2 at halftime, the Rangers came storming back in the second half, only to run into seven saves by Kean goalie Nikki Apostolopoulos.

Other Highlights: Junior attacker Theresa Shafron scored her fourth goal of the year, and junior attacker Anna Fiorini added an assist on that goal to put Drew on the board nine minutes into the first period.

Stat Sheet: The Rangers outshot the Cougars, who have lost just once this season, by a count of 24-19, with 16 of Drew's shots finding the target. Drew made just 10 turnovers compared the Kean's 14, and the Rangers' clear game was executed well with a 12-of-14 mark. Kean held slight advantages in groundballs (17-14) and draw controls (10-7).

Coach's Corner: "The team worked extremely hard and executed our game plan well. Our defense really stepped up and limited their opportunities. Our attack played very well as a team, but their goalie made some huge saves. We are looking forward to another opportunity on Saturday." – Head Coach Jane Karger

Up Next: Drew returns to Ranger Stadium on Saturday, April 9 to take on The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in a Landmark Conference game at 1:00 p.m.
