Drew Wins First Game on Strength of 4 Sheetz Scores

MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2016) — Junior forward Madi Sheetz put together a four-goal performance, tying a career high, to lead the Drew University field hockey team to its first victory of the year on Saturday morning, 4-0, over Keuka College.

Top Performers: The last time Sheetz scored four times was over a year ago during last season's opener against Cedar Crest College. She now has four goals, good for tops on the team. She has also never taken more than the eight shots on goal she registered in the win.

Sheikh took six shots and used two creative passes to assist on a couple Sheetz's scores.

Senior midfielder Cailyn Breski ripped four of Drew's 27 shots and pestered the goalie throughout, providing a constant presence in the circle.

Turning Point: Coming out of the mid-half water break, senior forward Huma Sheikh used some slippery moves to lose her defender. With daylight, Shekih scurried just outside the circle where she popped a cross on the ground to Sheetz. Full speed, Sheetz tracked down the cross and used a dive to redirect it past the goaltender on a soft touch. The highlight-reel one-hander gave Drew a 1-0 lead.

Other Highlights: Drew's defense was perfect, not allowing Keuka a single shot while putting up 27 of their own.

Sheetz and Shekih linked up again with 20 minutes left in the game. Shekih sent a long ball into the circle down the middle, where Sheetz, screening the goalie, got a stick on the ball, deflecting in her second goal of the game.

Sheetz registered her third career hat trick with 10 minutes to go when she tapped in a loose ball right on the goal line, eluding the diving goalie with a dive of her own. Sheetz layed out for every one of her first three goals.

Sheetz added a fourth with two minutes left when she jammed in another tap in. She tied her career-high with the score.

Up Next: The Rangers will look to use this win as fuel when they face a big challenge on Tuesday when they host No. 3 The College of New Jersey. The non-conference tilt is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
