MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 13, 2016) – The Drew University field hockey team played a scoreless opening 22 minutes against the No. 8 ranked College of New Jersey before succumbing to a 5-0 final score on Tuesday evening at Ranger Stadium.
By the Numbers: The Lions, who were ranked as high as No. 3 by the NFCHA National Poll this season, improve to 3-1. Drew falls to 1-4.
Top Performers: Sophomore goalkeeper
Ryann Callaghan faced 40 shots – 31 of which were shot on goal - in the setback. For the second time this season, she recorded a new career high in saves with 26 on Tuesday, ranking second all-time for a single game in Drew history. Callaghan's name now graces that top-10 category in the record book four times.
The save that sticks out is a sprawling stop of a penalty stroke by the Lions' Lexi Smith in the second half. Callaghan's lightning fast reaction allowed her to get a pad on the hard shot that was destined for the upper right corner of the cage. Incredibly, just 1:27 later, Callaghan stuffed Smith again on another penalty stroke.
Turning Point: Callaghan and the Drew defense handled the TCNJ pressure early, turning away shots and breaking up passes in the arch. The Lions finally broke through in the 23
rd minute before tacking on two more before halftime.
Up Next: The Rangers hit the road for a non-conference match at Delaware Valley University on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1:00 p.m.
