DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2016) – Freshman midfielder
Audrey Carr scored the sudden death game-winner and sophomore goalkeeper
Ryann Callaghan made 14 saves to propel the Drew University field hockey team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Delaware Valley University on Saturday afternoon.
By the Numbers: The Rangers improve to 2-4 overall win their first road game of the year in their second try. The Rams, meanwhile, fall to 2-5 and 0-3 at Robert A. Lipinski Field.
Top Performers: Carr's first collegiate goal is the definition of clutch. With the deadlocked double-overtime contest just 10 minutes away from a penalty stroke shootout, the rookie cleaned up her own second-chance shot past the goalkeeper for the walk-off win in the 91
st minute.
Callaghan continues to put the Rangers on her shoulders by keeping them in tough games with spectacular saves and impeccable arch control. Saturday marked her third double-digit save effort, with nine of them coming in a Ram-dominated second half. She then made three saves in the first overtime period to force the fateful second OT.
Turning Point: Overtime was made possible by Drew's leading scorer, junior forward
Madi Sheetz. With the Rams up early on a tally in just the second minute of play, Sheetz equalized in the 17
th minute by rocketing a shot into the top right corner of the cage for her sixth goal of the season.
Other Highlights: Callaghan and the defense survived a barrage of Ram shots from the 58
th through 65
th minutes during the second half. The standout keeper turned away four shots and the defense blocked one over that span, which included three DVU penalty corners.
Stat Sheet: The Rams outshot the Rangers 24-12 overall and 15-8 in shots on target, while also holding an advantage in corners, 12-3. Senior midfielder
Huma Sheikh was behind only Sheetz in shots taken with three (two on goal).
Up Next: The Rangers return home to host the Battle of Madison Avenue on Tuesday, Sept. 20 against FDU-Florham at 4:30 p.m. at Ranger Stadium.
