Drew Drops Double OT Heartbreaker to William Paterson

MADISON, N.J. – In its last home game of the season, the Drew University field hockey team (0-14) suffered a 3-2 double overtime loss to William Paterson (3-13) at Ranger Stadium on Wednesday night.  Madi Sheetz (Macungie, Pa.) scored twice for the Rangers in her final home contest.

After Nicole Goitiandia gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, Sheetz responded with the first of her two tallies.  Michele Pozyc's (Clark, N.J.) shot was blocked by the defense and the deflection went right to Sheetz, who fired it into the empty corner of the net to tie the score.  She put the Rangers in front two minutes later, when a scramble in front of the goal led to a loose ball, which Sheetz was able to corral and put home.

The Rangers took their 2-1 advantage into halftime, but William Paterson leveled the score on a tally by Brianna Reyes in the 52nd minute.  Despite a number of solid scoring chances by both sides over the final 18 minutes of regulation, neither team was able to connect and the contest went into overtime.

A defensive save by Pozyc early in the extra session kept it deadlocked, while Drew goalkeeper Ryann Callaghan (Fountain Valley, Calif.) made saves in the first overtime.  The Rangers also had a few opportunities at a game-winner turned aside, and the game moved into a second extra period.  Three minutes into the second overtime, Callaghan came out to break up a pass, but Nicole Andes was able to get open behind the play and knock it into the empty net, giving William Paterson the 3-2 victory.

Callaghan (0-12) made 19 saves in the loss, as the Pioneers outshot the Rangers 58-11.  With her two tallies, Sheetz had her fifth career multi-goal game.  She has been involved in every Drew goal this season.

Kristin Fries-Papa assisted on both the game-tying and game-winning goals for William Paterson.  Mallory Rickerhauser (3-12), meanwhile, recorded three saves for the Pioneers.

Drew concludes the season on the road.  The Rangers (0-6 Landmark) head to Goucher (4-10, 1-5 Landmark) at 1 p.m. on Saturday for their 2017 finale.
