Drew Sends Seniors Out With 1-0 Victory

MADISON, N.J. – In its final game of the 2017 season, the Drew University women's soccer team (7-10-1, 2-5-0 Landmark) notched a 1-0 victory over Goucher (7-9-2, 0-7-0 Landmark) at Ranger Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  An early goal by Sarah Racine (Denville, N.J.) held up, as the Rangers sent seniors Emily Bradford (Cranford, N.J.), Erin Connors (Fanwood, N.J.), Thalia Santacruz (Rahway, N.J.) and Katie Weber (Newton, N.J.) out as winners.

Despite suffering an apparent season-ending injury at Susquehanna on Oct. 14, Bradford got the start in her Senior Day game before being replaced by Racine.  And Racine put the Rangers on the board almost immediately after entering, as she took a cross from Leah Dentale (Northport, N.Y.) and tapped it into a wide open net.  Drew nearly added another in the 24th minute, but Alex Gilgorri's (Mount Plains, N.J.) attempt hit the post.  Goucher had a potential equalizer hit the crossbar in the 35th minute, and the Rangers took that 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Drew kept up the offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting the Gophers 7-2 in the period and 12-4 in the game.  The Rangers were unable to add to their lead, however, as Weber had a shot saved on the goal line by the Goucher defense and Gilgorri banged one off the crossbar.  Goucher goalkeeper Eric Bulzomi (2-2-0) also made six saves to keep it a 1-0 game.

The Gophers had a late opportunity to tie it in the 89th minute.  Bri Hite's shot sailed high, though, and Drew registered a season-ending 1-0 triumph.

Racine's goal was her seventh of the season, as she ended her freshman campaign as the team leader in that category.  Dentale, meanwhile, was credited with her team high seventh-assist.  Madison Dudziec (Stanhope, N.J.) (5-10-0) started in goal and earned the win, while Brielle Castanheira (Roxbury, N.J.) played the second half.  Both goalkeepers made one save in the shutout, Drew's fifth of the year.
