Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Comeback Effort Falls Just Short In Season-Opening Loss

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – After trailing by 23 points at halftime, the Drew University men's basketball team rallied to within two with seven seconds left on Wednesday night.  However, Farmingdale State's Liam Monaghan sank a pair of free throws to give the Rams (1-0) an 88-84 victory over the Rangers (0-1) at the Lynch Sports Center in the season opener for both teams.

Drew jumped out to a 10-2 lead barely three minutes into the contest, but Farmingdale State responded with a 13-0 run to go up 15-10.  It was still a five-point game, 24-19, with 5:52 left in the half when the Rams went on a 24-6 spurt to end the half.  Farmingdale State took a 48-25 advantage into the locker room, then extended its cushion to a game-high 24 points at 51-27 early in the second half.

However, Yonathan Napoleon (Los Angeles, Calif.) immediately followed with a layup and free throw at the 19:10 mark to start Drew's comeback effort.  The Rangers pulled within one at 66-65 on a Nate Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.) layup with 6:34 remaining before Farmingdale State scored six of the next eight points to bring the margin back to five, 72-67.  The Rams regained a 10-point advantage at 82-72 with 2:09 left, but Drew again responded, going on a 10-2 run to make it 84-82 with 22 seconds left.  The Rangers would get no closer, though, as Farmingdale State held on for an 88-84 victory.

Riley Collins (Lacey, N.J.) led three Rangers in double-figures with 26 points.  Napoleon tallied 20 points to go along with six assists, while Aldrich had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  He added four blocks and four steals.  Drew shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the floor, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from long range, and 73.3 percent (22-of-30) at the free throw line.

Matthew Graham registered a game-high 28 points for the Rams.  He also distributed five assists.  Monaghan finished with 22 points, and Eriq Williams notched a double-double with 13 points and 16 boards.  The Rams shot 40 percent (28-of-70) from the field and outrebounded the Rangers 48-38.  Farmingdale State was 11-for-24 (45.8 percent) from three-point land and 21-for-25 (84 percent) at the charity stripe.

The Rangers will open their home schedule this weekend with the annual Rose City Classic.  Drew begins the tournament on Saturday with a 6 p.m. matchup against Brooklyn (0-1).  At halftime of the contest, there will be a special ceremony recognizing the all-time assist leaders for both the men's and women's programs.
