Drew’s Incredible Run Ends In NCAA Sweet Sixteen

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Drew University men's soccer team (21-1-1) saw its incredible 2017 season come to an end on Saturday with a 1-0 loss to Brandeis (16-4-0) in the third round of the NCAA Tournament at Tufts University's Bello Field.  The loss, the Rangers' only defeat of the year, snapped Drew's 18-game winning streak, which had been the longest in the nation.
 
Brandeis, which was playing in the round of 16 for the fifth consecutive year, had several early scoring chances, but Jason Adamo (Roxbury, N.J.) kept the game tied with five first-half saves.  Adamo knocked a shot that was bending towards the goal off the crossbar in the 27th minute.  He then stopped a one-timer in the 38th minute, as the contest went into halftime scoreless.
 
In the 52nd minute, the Judges snuck the only goal of the game past Adamo.  Josh Ocel took a free kick at an angle from roughly 25 yards out, and Mike Lynch headed it in to give Brandeis the lead.  The Judges nearly made it 2-0 barely three minutes later, but Patrick Flahive's attempt bounced off the crossbar. 
 
Drew then had its best scoring chances of the game in the 59th minute, when Brandeis goalkeeper Ben Woodhouse stopped a potential own goal and Nate Race's (Bridgewater, N.J.) rebound went high.  However, the Rangers were unable to slip one past Woodhouse, and the Judges advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals against defending National Champion Tufts with a 1-0 triumph.
 
Adamo (21-1-1) was credited with five saves in the loss, while Woodhouse (13-4-0) made two saves for Brandeis.  Lynch's game-winning goal was his seventh of the year.
 
This marked the third Sweet Sixteen appearance in program history, and the first since 2003.  Drew's 21 victories this season tied the school record, while the Rangers established new program marks for winning percentage (.935) and fewest losses (1).
