Wesleyan Hands Drew First Loss of the Season

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Drew University women's basketball team returned to action on Sunday afternoon with a matchup at Wesleyan.  Playing on the road for the first time this season, the Rangers (3-1) suffered their first loss, as the Cardinals (3-1) registered an 84-48 victory at Silloway Gym.
 
Wesleyan got a three-pointer on the opening possession and held a 7-2 lead before the Rangers rallied to tie it at 8-8 midway through the first quarter.  However, the Cardinals ended the period on a 16-6 run and held a 24-14 advantage after 10 minutes.  Wesleyan then outscored Drew 16-8 in the second quarter to extend its cushion to 18 points, 40-22, at intermission.
 
After the Cardinals increased the margin to 25 points at 55-30 with 1:23 remaining in the third quarter, the Rangers went on a 6-1 rally to trim its deficit to 56-36 entering the final period.  Wesleyan started the fourth quarter on a 17-6 spurt, though, to open up a 31-point edge, 73-42, and the Cardinals would go on to win by an 84-48 count.
 
Moe Davis Campbell (Franklin, N.J.) led the Rangers with 13 points and five rebounds off the bench.  Hailey Stine (Annandale, N.J.) finished with 11 points, while Michaela Keegan (Mendham, N.J.) tallied 10 points.  Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.) chipped in eight points to go along with six assists and six steals.  Drew was held to just 27.6 percent (16-of-58) shooting, including 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from long range.  The Rangers went 14-for-18 (77.8 percent) at the free throw line.
 
For Wesleyan, Maddie Bledsoe had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.  Olivia Gorman finished with a game-high 15 points and five steals, while Heidi Scarth tallied 14 points.  Maeve Vitale registered 10 points, and Emma Roush contributed 10 points and three steals.  Chynna Bailey, meanwhile, notched seven points, nine rebounds and six assists.  The Cardinals outrebounded the Rangers 52-28 and shot 47.7 percent (31-of-65) from the field.  Wesleyan was 8-for-22 (36.4 percent) from three-point land and 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) at the charity stripe.
 
Drew (0-0 Landmark) returns to Baldwin Gymnasium at 4 p.m. on Saturday for its Landmark Conference opener against Catholic (2-1, 0-0 Landmark).
