Rangers Drop Landmark Opener to Catholic

MADISON, N.J. – On Saturday afternoon, the Drew University women's basketball team opened its Landmark Conference schedule with a matchup against Catholic.  Playing for the first time in nearly a week, the Rangers (3-2, 0-1 Landmark) dropped a 68-49 decision to the Cardinals (3-1, 1-0 Landmark) at Baldwin Gymnasium.
 
After Catholic scored the first six points of the game, the Rangers responded with a 5-0 run to cut their deficit to one.  Drew tied it at 12-12 on a pair of Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.) free throws at the 3:21 mark of the first quarter.  The Cardinals ended the period on a 6-2 spurt, though, to open up an 18-14 advantage.  Catholic extended its cushion to 29-16 with 6:42 left in the second quarter, but the Rangers rallied for 11 of the next 12 points to pull within three, 30-27.  The Cardinals led by eight, 35-27, at the halftime break.
 
Catholic increased its advantage to 14 points at 45-31 with 3:34 left in the third quarter, and the margin was 13 points, 52-39, entering the final period.  The Cardinals then opened the fourth quarter on a 9-1 to take their largest lead of the game, 61-50, with 5:44 remaining.  The final margin was 19 points, as Drew suffered its second straight loss, 68-49.
 
Ramos led the Rangers with 15 points, while Michaela Keegan (Mendham, N.J.) tallied 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.  Moe Davis Campbell (Franklin, N.J.) added 10 points six boards and three steals, and Sarah Henig (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with three assists.  The Rangers shot 32.6 percent (15-of-46) from the field, 25 percent (3-of-12) from three-point range, and 66.7 percent (16-of-24) at the free throw line.
 
For the Cardinals, Briana Bull had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Sam Cowan finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Megan Stafford tallied nine points, eight boards and three steals.  CC Mooney added 10 points off the bench.  Catholic shot 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the floor and outrebounded Drew 42-38.  The Cardinals went 9-for-24 (37.5 percent) from downtown and 9-for-17 (52.9 percent) at the charity stripe.
 
The contest marked the start of a span where the Rangers will play four games in seven days.  Drew hosts FDU-Florham (2-3) in the annual "Battle of Madison" at 7 p.m. on Monday.
