Drew Falls to FDU-Florham In Annual “Battle of Madison”

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's basketball team welcomed local rival FDU-Florham to Baldwin Gymnasium on Monday night for the annual "Battle of Madison."  It was a one-point game at halftime and tied late in the third quarter, but the Devils (3-3) eventually pulled away for an 86-64 victory over the Rangers (3-3).

FDU-Florham opened up a 14-8 lead midway through the first quarter before Drew closed the period on an 8-4 run to trim its deficit to two, 18-16.  The Rangers tied it on their first possession of the second quarter, then went up 27-22 on Aly Axman's (Baltimore, Md.) three-pointer with 6:12 left before halftime.  After Drew extended its cushion to six points at 29-23, the Devils rallied for seven straight points to go back in front, 30-29.  Moe Davis Campbell (Franklin, N.J.) hit a layup on the other end, though, and the Rangers took a 31-30 advantage into the locker room.

Drew scored the first two baskets of the third quarter to push the margin to five points, 35-30, but FDU-Florham responded with an 11-0 spurt to go up 41-35 with 6:03 left in the quarter.  The Rangers countered with seven straight points, regaining the lead on a Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.) jumper at the 4:34 mark.

It was a 43-43 game when FDU-Florham went on 9-0 run to end the third quarter, giving the Knights a 52-43 advantage heading into the final period.  FDU-Florham carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, opening up a 25-point edge, 83-58, with 2:02 remaining before closing out an 86-64 victory.  It was FDU-Florham's second consecutive win in the rivalry and extended the Devils' lead in the all-time series to 38-23.

Davis Campbell tallied a team-high 16 points for the Rangers, while Erin Frederick (Staten Island, N.Y.) just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.  Michaela Keegan (Mendham, N.J.) finished with 11 points and seven assists, and Axman distributed five assists.  Sarah Henig (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) grabbed eight rebounds, as the Rangers held a 37-35 edge on the glass.  Drew shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the field, 25 percent (4-of-16) from three-point land, and 60 percent (6-of-10) at the free throw line.  However, the Rangers also committed 28 turnovers, which resulted in 34 FDU-Florham points.

Kendrea Williams scored 36 points to lead the Devils.  Gabrielle Harris contributed 18 points and four steals, and Bria Smith notched 13 points and five rebounds.  Raven Dowling, meanwhile, finished with nine points, eight rebounds, eight assists and six steals.  FDU-Florham shot 42 percent (29-of-69) from the floor, 43.8 percent (14-of-32) from long range, and 77.8 percent (14-of-18) at the charity stripe.

After playing five of their first six at Baldwin Gymnasium, the Rangers will be away from home for nine of their next 11 contests.  Drew begins a five-game road trip with a 6 p.m. matchup at Centenary (2-6) on Wednesday.
