Napoleon Drops 29, But Drew Falls to Wilkes, 87-80

MADISON, N.J. – Despite 29 points from Yonathan Napoleon (Los Angeles, Calif.), the Drew University men's basketball team (2-3) suffered an 87-80 defeat against Wilkes (5-1) at Baldwin Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Playing for the first time in eight days, the Rangers raced out to an early 14-7 lead.  Wilkes rallied within one at 24-23 midway through the first half, but Drew responded with a 15-9 run to push its cushion back to seven, 39-32, with 1:17 remaining before halftime.  The Colonels scored the last four points of the half, though, cutting Drew's advantage to three, 39-36, at intermission.

Wilkes took a 42-39 lead early in the second half, but the Rangers got a three-pointer from Napoleon and a pair of free throws from Nate Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.) to go back in front.  The Colonels regained a four-point edge at 48-44 before Drew regained the lead on the strength of six straight Napoleon points.

However, after Napoleon hit a three to make it 57-56 Drew at the 11:13 mark, Wilkes went on a 15-4 run to open up a 10-point cushion, 71-61.  The Rangers countered with five straight points to cut their deficit in half, but the Colonels scored 11 of the next 15 points to go up 81-70 with 53 seconds remaining.  It was a 10-point game, 87-77, when Riley Collins (Lacey, N.J.) drained a late trey to make the final margin seven, 87-80.

Napoleon, who also had four assists, led three Rangers in double figures.  Aldrich finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Collins tallied 18 points to go along with four assists and three steals.  Dan Roibal (Middletown, N.J.), meanwhile, made his first start of the season and grabbed six rebounds.  Drew shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the field, 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from long range, and 70 percent (14-of-20) at the free throw line.

Rob Pecorelli paced the Colonels with 30 points.  Marcus Robinson added 16 points and six rebounds, while Zach Brunner had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.  Mason Gross contributed 11 points and seven rebounds, as Wilkes held a 42-30 advantage on the glass.  The Colonels shot 50 percent (29-of-58) from the floor, including 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from three-point land, and 78.3 percent (18-of-23) at the charity stripe.

The Rangers (0-0 Landmark) begin Landmark Conference play on Saturday with a 2 p.m. matchup against Catholic (1-2, 0-0 Landmark).  It will be the first half of a doubleheader, as the contest will be followed by the Drew-Catholic women's game at 4 p.m.
