Rangers Drop Daytona Beach Shootout Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Drew University women's basketball team returned to action for the first time in nearly two weeks on Wednesday afternoon.  The Rangers (5-4) jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead on Carthage in the opening game of the Daytona Beach Shootout, but the Lady Reds (7-3) rallied to post a 60-53 victory at the Ocean Center.

Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.) sank a three-pointer on Drew's first possession of the game, and the Rangers had a 14-7 lead midway through the first quarter.  After a Hailey Stine (Annandale, N.J.) trey put Drew up 17-10 with 1:53 left in the period, Carthage scored the next four points to pull within three, 17-14.  However, Erin Frederick's (Staten Island, N.Y.) layup just before the horn gave Drew a 19-14 advantage after one.

In the second quarter, the Rangers extended that margin to 12 points, as a Ramos jumper capped a 13-6 run that made it 32-20 with 3:19 remaining before halftime.  The lead reached a game high 15 points at 37-22 on Michaela McLeod's (West Milford, N.J.) trey at the 1:03 mark, and Drew held a 37-26 cushion at intermission.

However, Carthage outscored Drew 18-3 in the third quarter to take a 44-40 lead.  The Lady Reds sank a three-pointer on their opening possession of the fourth quarter to extend the margin to seven, 47-40, but the Rangers responded with a 5-0 spurt to trim their deficit to two, 47-45.  Carthage scored nine of the next 13 points, though, to regain a seven-point edge, 56-49, with 2:56 left.  The Rangers got a Ramos free throw and a Stine trey to make it a three-point game, 56-53, with 2:19 to go, before the Lady Reds closed out a 60-53 win.

Ramos paced the Rangers with 16 points to go along with four assists and four rebounds.  Stine tallied 15 points, while Moe Davis Campbell (Franklin, N.J.) recorded 12 points and eight boards off the bench.  Sarah Henig (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) added six rebounds for Drew, which shot 39.2 percent (20-of-51) as a team.  The Rangers were 8-for-19 (42.1 percent) from three-point range and 5-for-8 (62.5 percent) at the charity stripe.

For the Lady Reds, Madie Kaelber led the way with 16 points.  Rachel Szydlowski registered 12 points, and Morgan Harris tallied 11 points to go along with eight rebounds.  Bailey Gilbert pulled down nine boards, while Maggie Berigan finished with eight rebounds and four blocks.  Carthage shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the field and outrebounded Drew 45-28.  The Lady Reds went 5-for-18 (27.8 percent) from downtown and 15-for-21 (71.4 percent) at the free throw line.

Drew concludes the Daytona Beach Shootout with a 10 a.m. matchup against Lebanon Valley (8-4) on Thursday.
