Rangers Close 2017 With Dominant Win at John Jay

NEW YORK – In its final game of 2017, the Drew University women's basketball team had its most dominant effort in nearly a decade.  The Rangers (7-4) scored the first 11 points of the game and never looked back en route to a 76-28 win over John Jay (0-10) at the Doghouse on Saturday afternoon.  Drew's 48-point margin of victory was its largest since a 73-25 triumph over Hood on Nov. 22, 2008.

Drew made five of its first seven shots and led 11-0 just 3:39 into the game.  It was 17-2 at the end of the first quarter, and the Rangers extended the margin to 19 points, 25-6, on a Lisa Cappiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) trey with 4:26 remaining before halftime.  John Jay outscored Drew 9-4 over the rest of the half, though, cutting its deficit to 29-15 at the break.

However, the Rangers started the third quarter on a 16-1 run to push its advantage to 29 points, 45-16.  Drew held John Jay without a field goal in the period, outscoring the Bloodhounds 26-3 to take a 55-18 cushion into the fourth quarter.  The lead reached 46 points at 74-28 on a Michaela McLeod (West Milford, N.J.) three-pointer with 2:44 left before an Aly Axman (Baltimore, Md.) layup closed out the 76-28 triumph.

Ten different Rangers scored in the contest, led by Moe Davis Campbell (Franklin, N.J.) and Michaela Keegan's (Mendham, N.J.) 14 points apiece.  Davis Campbell also grabbed seven rebounds, while Keegan recorded a pair of blocks.  Cappiello tallied 10 points and three assists, and Erin Frederick (Staten Island, N.Y.) contributed seven points to go along with eight boards.  Axman, meanwhile, secured a career-best seven rebounds while also distributing five assists.  Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.) handed out five of her seven assists in the first quarter.  In addition, Bree Scotti (Cranford, N.J.) posted six points and six rebounds.

Hailey Stine (Annandale, N.J.) had four of Drew's 17 steals, as the Rangers forced 24 John Jay turnovers.  The Rangers also tallied 24 assists on 30 made baskets and outrebounded the Bloodhounds 47-36.  Drew shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the field, 15 percent (3-of-20) from three-point range, and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) at the free throw line.

Dana Nicholson paced John Jay with eight points, and she added eight rebounds.  Jessica Gorman, meanwhile, finished with seven points and a game-high 11 boards.  John Jay was held to 14.8 percent (8-of-54) shooting, including 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from beyond the arc.  The Bloodhounds went 10-for-14 (71.4 percent) at the charity stripe.

After playing five straight away from home, the Rangers return to Baldwin Gymnasium for the only time in an eight-game stretch on Tuesday afternoon.  Drew hosts Baruch (1-5) at 4 p.m. in its final non-conference matchup of the season.
