Axman’s Double-Double Lifts Drew to Third Straight Victory

MADISON, N.J. – Aly Axman (Baltimore, Md.) made her first career start for the Drew University women's basketball team on Tuesday afternoon, and she responded with a career day.  Axman recorded her first career double-double, finishing with career-highs of 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Rangers (8-4) to a 75-39 victory over Baruch (1-6) at Baldwin Gymnasium.  The win was Drew's third straight and fifth in its last six games.

Playing at home for the first time in nearly a month, the Rangers took control of the game early on, using a 14-4 run to turn a 6-4 lead into a 20-8 advantage.  After Baruch pulled within six at 20-14, Erin Frederick (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Sarah Henig (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) hit jumpers to give Drew a 24-14 cushion after one quarter.

The Rangers then outscored the Bearcats 18-9, including a 10-0 spurt, in the second quarter to extend their lead to 19 points, 42-23, at the break.  It was more of the same in the third quarter, as Drew started the period on a 12-0 rally and held a 34-point edge, 62-28, entering the final frame.  The margin reached a game-high 41 points when a Lisa Cappiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) trey made it 70-29 with 5:36 remaining, and the Rangers won by a final count of 75-39, marking the second straight game and third time this season in which Drew held its opponent under 40 points.

All 10 Rangers who appeared in the game scored, led by a career-high 20 points from Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.).  She added eight steals and six rebounds.  Henig notched 10 points, six boards and four steals, while Moe Davis Campbell (Franklin, N.J.) tallied 11 points and three assists.  Michaela McLeod (West Milford, N.J.) grabbed six rebounds, and Cappiello secured five boards to go along with four assists.

Drew had a season-high 20 steals and outrebounded Baruch 51-38.  The Rangers also handed out 22 assists on 31 field goals.  Drew shot 40.3 percent (31-of-77) from the field, 30 percent (9-of-30) from downtown, and 33.3 percent (4-of-12) at the free throw line.

Shannon Barrett registered 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals for Baruch.  Sameera Ahmed contributed 10 points, while Melinda Spahiu pulled down 11 rebounds to go along with eight points.  Lissette Debord added eight rebounds for the Bearcats, who shot 25 percent (13-of-52) as a team.  Baruch went 2-for-7 (28.6 percent) from three-point land and 11-for-16 (68.8 percent) at the charity stripe.

This marked Drew's only appearance at Baldwin Gymnasium in an eight-game stretch, as well as the Rangers' final non-conference outing of the season.  Drew (0-1 Landmark) resumes Landmark Conference play with a 4 p.m. contest at Goucher (0-11, 0-1 Landmark) on Saturday.
