MADISON, N.J. (March 16, 2017) — Senior midfielder
Morgan Mason built upon her already impressive season with a six goal performance in a 19-3 victory over SUNY Canton on Thursday, at Ranger Stadium.
By the Numbers
The Rangers push their record to 5-1 as the first third of the season comes to a close. Drew is in the midst of a five game winning streak for the first time since 2014 and, by opening the season 5-1, the Rangers accomplished their best start since 2008. The Kangaroos have yet to notch their first victory, falling to 0-3.
Top Performers
• Mason netted three of her six goals in a 4-minute span late in the fist half. The goals propelled Drew to the 12-goal run it would end the game on. The third of that flurry came after a cheeky stutter step to pump fake that froze her defender and allowed for an easy trip to the net.
• Junior midfielder
Nicole Kinney set a career high with five points. The junior also matched a career-high with four goals. The first time she accomplished the feat was last year in a Landmark Conference game against Moravian College. She also scored two of the Rangers' first three goals.
• Senior attacker
Theresa Shafron scored multiple goals for the fifth consecutive game with a hat trick, she's now got 16 on the season.
• Junior attacker
Sage Johnson also logged a hatty and pushed her season total to 11.
• Senior attacker
Anna Fiorini pitched in three assists.
Turning Point
SUNY Canton actually opened the scoring but Kinney was quick to equalize when she shuffled into the scoring zone alone and ripped one low. Kinney's solo mission tied things up seven minutes into the contest. Less than one minute later, Johnson put Drew up with a score that came on a smart pass from Shafron.
Highlights
• The Rangers defensive contingent managed to hold SUNY Canton scoreless throughout the entire second half.
• Sophomore attacker
Mia Campanale scored the Rangers seventh goal of the game, important because it was the first of the 13 goal streak Drew would end on.
• Freshman attacker
Barrie Rogers closed the game with her first collegiate goal, which came after she faked one way, spun to her left hand side and sent the goal in on a bounce.
Stat Sheet
• The Rangers went 18-for-18 in clearing attempts, a rare 100-percent successful effort.
• Drew outshot SUNY Canton 33-6, with 25 of them coming on goal.
• The Kangaroos turned the ball over 27 times in the game to Drew's 18.
