SWARTHMORE, Pa. (March 18, 2017) – The Drew University men's lacrosse team saw its two-game win streak halted with a 12-4 setback at Swarthmore College on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
By the Numbers: The Rangers' record evens at 3-3 with their first loss of the season on the road, while the Garnet up their record to 4-2 overall and 2-1 at Clothier Field.
Top Performers
• The scoring streak continues for freshman midfielder
Kevin Goettlich to start his college career. With a goal and an assist against Swarthmore, the rookie has scored in all six games and now has at least one goal and one assist in each of the last four contests. Goettlich also led the Rangers on Saturday with five groundballs and three caused turnovers.
• Junior attacker
Jack Crowley has also scored in all six games in 2017 and was the second Ranger to tally both a goal and an assist against the Garnet. The junior transfer continues to lead Drew in the goals department with 12.
The Difference: Swarthmore's swarming defense and aggressive attack early in the game put the Rangers in an insurmountable hole. The Garnet held Drew scoreless in the first half, taking a 3-0 lead after one quarter and a 5-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
Highlights
• Senior midfielder
Tom Cotroneo returned healthy from an injury that caused him to miss three games. Cotroneo got the Rangers on the board in the third period with his second goal of the season.
• Goettlich and Crowley took turns feeding each other on goal-scoring shots to help the Rangers score three in the third quarter and trail 9-3 heading into the fourth.
• Sophomore attacker
Ryan D'Alessandro netted his eighth tally of the year on a man-up opportunity with 1:44 left in the game to set the final score of 12-4.
Stat Sheet
• The Rangers put 16 of their 25 shots on target, but were outshot overall at Swartmore, 43-25.
• The Garnet won both the groundball battle (26-20) and the faceoff war (14-6).
• The Rangers posted a better clear percentage (17-of-20) compared to Swarthmore (16-of-23).
• Swarthmore killed off the first five man-down situations of the game before allowing D'Alessandro's goal in the final two minutes of the game.
