Men's Tennis Wins Conference Opener, 8-1, at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (March 25, 2017) – An 8-1 win at Elizabethtown College to begin Landmark Conference play ran the winning streak to six straight for the Drew University men's tennis team on Saturday.
 
The Rangers' record stands at 11-1 following the Landmark opener, while the Blue Jays fall to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.
 
Drew took a commanding 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles with all three duos scoring 8-2 victories. Junior Salikh Gilmutdinov and sophomore Will Morrison won at No. 1, followed by sophomore Vineet Vemulapally and freshman Geoffrey Diehl and second doubles. Freshman Parker Diamond and sophomore Chris Morville finished up the doubles sweep at the No. 3 spot.
 
The Rangers clinched the match with straight-set victories at No. 1 and 2 singles by Gilmutdinov and Vemulapally, respectively, who lost just three games combined in those matches. Morrison and Diehl followed suit with straight-set wins at third and fourth singles, with Morrison's match highlighted by a comeback from being down 3-0 in the first set before winning six straight to take the set, 6-3.
 
Freshman Bryce Weizer won at sixth singles in a three-setter, winning the first set 6-4 before falling 6-3 in the second. Weizer set the final dual match score at 8-1 by winning the superbreaker, 10-6.
 
During the Rangers' six-match win streak, they have outscored opponents 50-4. Gilmutdinov and Diehl each remain unbeaten in dual match singles this season at 10-0. In doubles, Diehl, Morrison and Vemulapally have all been a part of 13 victories to lead the team.
 
Landmark Conference play continues at home on Saturday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m. against Moravian College.
