Landmark Play Opens for Women's Lax With a Loss at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 25, 2017) – The Drew University women's lacrosse team dropped its Landmark Conference opener at No. 9 The Catholic University of America, 18-6, on Saturday afternoon.
 
By the Numbers: The Rangers fall to 5-4 overall with their third consecutive loss, while the nationally ranked Cardinals improve to 4-2 in both teams' opening conference game.
 
Top Performers
• Senior attacker Theresa Shafron netted a hat trick, her fifth three-goal game of the season. She now leads the team with 21 goals and 30 points this spring.
• Senior attacker Anna Fiorini, junior midfielder Nicole Kinney and freshman midfielder Allie DiDario added tallies for the Rangers.
• On the defensive end, sophomore Shaylyn MacKinnon scooped a team-high five groundballs, while DiDario and senior midfielder Morgan Mason each caused two turnovers.
 
The Difference: Catholic took control early with the first 15 goals of the game while pitching a shutout in the opening half to lead 15-0 at intermission.
 
Highlights
• Shafron and DiDario scored back-to-back unassisted goals to open scoring in the second half two minutes apart.
• Shafron's second goal came on a free position attempt, the first of two straight free position goals for Drew. The second belonged to Fiorini with 10:08 to play.
• DiDario scored her ninth goal of the season late in the second half, and Shafron capped the scoring with her hat trick with just seven seconds left off a feed from junior attacker Sage Johnson.

• Catholic outshot Drew 26-18 while putting 21 of those shots on target.
• Both teams missed just one clear on the day with the Rangers going 6-of-7 compared to the Cardinals' 8-of-9.
• Catholic held slight edges in groundballs (27-23) and draw controls (13-11).
• The Rangers allowed just three free position shots, one of which Catholic converted. Drew, meanwhile, was 2-of-7 on attempts from the 8-meter.
 
Up Next: The Rangers continue non-conference play on the road Wednesday, March 29 at Muhlenberg College with opening draw slated for 4:00 p.m.
