Baseball Shuts Out Swarthmore Behind Boyle's Brilliance

SWARTHMORE, Pa. (March 29, 2017) — With arguably the best start of his Drew University baseball career, senior pitcher Patrick Boyle stymied Swarthmore College with seven and two-thirds scoreless, two-hit innings of work in the Rangers' 2-0 road victory on Wednesday night.

Top Performers
Boyle worked as long into this game than he had at any point during his career. The final line he posted read 7.2 innings, just two hits, three walks, four strikeouts and no runs. The effort came via just 95 pitches.

Freshman DH Matthew Lange collected the first two hits of his collegiate career with singles in the fourth and ninth innings. Freshman outfielder Brandon Radd pinch ran for Lange after that single and came around to score the winning run for Drew.

Junior second baseman Isaiah Mateo continued his hot streak by reaching base twice, singling directly after Lange in the ninth and coming around to score Drew's second and final run.

Senior pitcher Ryan Fitzpatrick finished things off with an inning and a third in relief and earned the win for his trouble. Usually a starter, Fitzpatrick improves to 3-1 on the year.

Turning Point
After Lange and Mateo singled, sophomore shortstop Zach Lipshitz followed with a single to right to load the bases. With the pressure of the potential winning run just 90 feet away, the Swarthmore reliever panicked and lost control of the very first pitch of the at-bat and struck senior left fielder Richie Poland with the pitch, crediting him with the game-winning RBI.

Other Highlights
• Sophomore third baseman Eric DiPietro exercised great patience following the Poland hit by pitch and drew a bases loaded walk to force in a bit of insurance for the Rangers. It was the fourth RBI of the year for DiPietro.
• Freshman center fielder Max Felsenstein made his first career start and picked up his first career hit with a single in the fifth.

Up Next
