Drew Softball Drops Pair on Opening Day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 5, 2017) – The Drew University softball team opened up the 2017 season with a pair of losses, 8-0 to New England College in six innings and 6-2 to Muhlenberg College on Sunday at the PFX Spring Games in Florida.
 
By the Numbers
Drew starts 0-2, while New England and Muhlenberg each won season openers over the Rangers.
 
Top Performers
• Sophomore outfielder Katie Grodski, junior outfielder Lauren Mastropierro and sophomore designated player Cara O'Leary picked up hits in each game, while junior outfielder Brooke Adams went 2-for-3 with an RBI against Muhlenberg.
• Grodski ripped a one-out double in Drew's two-run sixth inning against Muhlenberg, scoring freshman Meghan Beyer after she walked to lead off the frame. It was her second double of the day after a two-bagger in the fourth inning against New England.
 
Game 1 Highlights
• Mastropierro's first at-bat of 2017 went down as a leadoff triple in the bottom of the second inning, but the Pilgrims worked around it for three straight outs without allowing the run to score.
• New England scored three in the top of the sixth and retired the final seven Rangers to invoke the eight-run rule.
 
Game 2 Highlights
• Muhlenberg took an early 2-0 lead in the first and tacked on an important insurance run in the third off starting pitcher Emma Agostini.
• After the Mules took a commanding 6-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth, Grodski and Adams delivered the first two runs of the 2017 season. Adams' was a double down the right field line to score Grodski, who knocked in a run two at-bats earlier.
